Anyone who loves sushi or samurai movies would get a kick out of "Koun Kukki: The Legend of Hamachi and Unagi". Informall Theater Co. is presenting this original work on the Wooly Mammoth Main Stage. A broad send-up of American perceptions of Japanese history, I think it is also an homage to the traditions of Japanese theater. Strangely, fortune cookies figure prominently (hence the title), so maybe it's also a tribute to Chinese restaurants.
Despite the presence of roving samurai, I almost thought I detected some contemporary American figures, portrayed by life-size puppets. They seek two samurai to send on a dangerous quest.
While searching for WMD's, Unagi has a run-in with a hungry dragon. And of course, many other adventures, for thus are legends made.Definitely an original and entertaining show. To see more of my photos of Koun Kukki, go to http://paulgillis.phanfare.com/album/338390/482325#imageID=21999667
