Fringe for Art's Sake

by Paul Gillis

On Thursday evening, before the opening night party had even started, I saw my first Fringe production of the year.

banished? productions is presenting bobrauschenbergamerica, a play by Charles Mee. Fittingly for a work named after a famous painter and sculptor, it is performed in an art gallery, Long View Gallery at 9th and N Streets NW.

In the cozy confines of this space, the cast of 5 women interacts with the audience, as well as each other, while still images and video are projected on cloth scrims hanging from the ceiling. As seen in these photos, an all-white theme dominates the costume and set design. The crew even give out white mantles to audience members who did not dress in white!
